2010 Edibles and Berry Varieties
Blueberries: $9 and $12 each bare root Potted $12 and $18.95
BLUECROP:
Introduced in 1952. Highbush; midseason. Standards of excellence. Bluecrop is a leading commercial variety. Medium to large, open clusters of large, firm, crack resistant, light blue fruit. High quality fruit with good subacid flavor. Bluecrop is good for fresh eating, preserves, baking and freezing. Vigorous, upright growth, will reach 4-6 feet at maturity. Slender light red canes. Tends to overbear unless properly pruned. Bluecrop will grow well in most areas.BLUERAY:
Introduced from the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1955. Highbush; early midseason. This variety is an old favorite. Small, tight clusters of large, medium blue fruit. Soft, firm skin of Blueray resist cracking. Excellent quality berries with a sweet, slightly tart, aromatic flavor. Vigorous and very productive, this bush will grow 4-6 feet tall at maturity. Bright red wood in the winter. Tight clusters may discourage machine picking.BRIGITTA: Late. Fresh from Australia. This easy to grow hybrid yields one of the highest quality berries available. The fruit is large, light blue, firm, with a crisp texture. The flavor strikes a perfect balance-sweet yet very slightly tart. Brigitta berries have amazing shelf life. We have stored the berries for over a month in the refrigerator and they were still crisp and tasted great! The slightly spreading bush is a fast grower with deep green foliage and bronze tinted new growth. A real winner in any garden. Zone 4-7.
CHANDLER:
Mid to late season. Bigger is better when it comes to Chandler. With fruit the size of cherries and surprisingly delicious flavor, Chandler is clearly the world’s largest blueberry. Another great feature that will provide your customers a bounty of fresh picked fruit for over six weeks is Chandler’s long ripening season! The bush is vigorous with large, dark green foliage and a slightly spreading habit to 5-6 feet. Zn: 4-7.EARLIBLUE:
Vigorous, erect, productive. Berry is medium-large, light blue, firm, resistant to cracking, medium scar; flavor good, sweet, aromatic; fruit ripens early, doesn't drop quickly once ripe, & ships well. Suitable for fresh market & u-pick.NORTHSKY:
Small to medium, light blue fruit with dusty blooms. Excellent wild blueberry flavor that is superior to most highbush varieties. Low spreading bush with dense foliage. 12 to 18 inches tall and can get to 24 to 36 inches wide. Small dark green leaves turn red in the fall. Yields 1 to 2 pounds of fruit per bush. Home garden variety for areas with severely cold winters, but abundant snow cover to insulate the plant. Does well in warmer areas. Great plant without the giant height. Grows well in USDA zones 3 to 7.SUNSHINE BLUE New (potted) $16.95
Midseason. For gardens from San Diego to Seattle, Sunshine Blue has it all. This semi-dwarf evergreen blueberry features a highly-branched compact habit to 3 feet tall. The showy hot pink flowers in spring yield large crops of dime-sized, delicious blueberries with a unique tangy flavor for up to 9 weeks in the summer. Self pollinating. Low chill requirement. Ornamental too! Zones 5-10.JERSEY:
One of the oldest and most widely grown of all varieties, Jersey is a favorite for home gardeners wanting an easy to grow, heavy producing late season variety. This bush grows quite large, often reaching 7 feet at maturity. The dark blue, small to medium sized fruit is very sweet and a favorite for baking. A reliable producer year after year. Zones 4-7Gooseberries: Consort, Josta, Cradal and Pixwell. Limited supply, shop early!
Red Raspberries: $3
CHILCOTIN
: Berry a bit larger than Willamette which used to be considered the largest berry of all. Firm berry has an attractive color and exceptional flavor. Another must for fresh market fruit stand sales. Long fruiting season, ripens from late July to early August. Hardier than Willamette or Meeker, about the same hardiness as Canby. $3Amity
(everbearing) Developed at the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station in Corvallis. Large, firm, dark red berries with classic raspberry flavor and superior quality. Excellent for fresh market. Amity is good for shipping, freezing, and canning. Amity is resistant to Root Rot and can take somewhat heavier soils. Amity is also aphid resistant. Amity involves two crops. One on the first year growth in the Fall (beginning in late August), and again the following June on the 2 year old wood. The Fall crop will tend to be heavier if the canes are mowed, as the plant does not use any energy to ripen the Spring crop. Berry sticks to the plug until quite ripe. Recommended for the home gardener due to its excellent flavor. Zone 3-9. $3.00BLACK CAP VARIETIES/SPECIALTIES $7 each
MARIONBERRY: Developed for Western Washington and OR. Named after Marion County, Oregon. Berries are large, bright black, and excellent flavor. Recommended for fresh eating, jams, preserves, and desserts. Vigorous, thorny plant, strong canes and thrifty cane production. Ripens in July and early August along with the Boysenberry. Seeds are 1/7 the size of Boysen, making it a very popular pie berry. $7 each
TAYBERRY: Introduced by Scottish Horticultural Research Institute. Named after the River Tay in Scotland. Tayberry was bred from a cross between the blackberry Aurora, a high quality variety bred in Oregon, USA and an improved Tetraploid Raspberry from the breeding program at the Scottish Corp. Research Institute. Tayberry is ready for picking from early July through mid August. Long, moderately vigorous canes. Berries are large, long conical shape and a reddish purple color with excellent, slightly aromatic flavor. Excellent quality for freezing, canning, jams, and jellies. Tayberry has shown considerable promise for the fresh fruit and processing markets. SOLD OUT
SYLVAN BERRY
:1984 release from Australia is the result of a cross between Marion and a Boysenberry hybrid. This variety is more upright than Marion. Fruit flavor is excellent. Potted onlyRhubarb
: Rheum rhabarum ‘Victoria’ $16 and $10. Chosen for the red stalks. Better color in colder winters. Consistent good flavor.Strawberries: .75 each or $15 Bundle of 25
Hood:
Released in 1965 from Oregon State University. The large round (Globose) berry is considered to have the best table quality. Hood is known best as a fine preserve and jam berry, and is good for all other uses. Resistant to Root Rot, Mildew, and Red Stele but is quite susceptible to virus and should not be planted near strawberries known to be virused. Bears entire crop over a short period. Popular home garden variety.Shuksan:
A Washington Release. Large and glossy bright red fruit with slightly indented yellowish red seeds. Medium firm meaty flesh with good flavor. Good for fresh eating and excellent for freezing. The plant is large and very vigorous. Also produces runners freely. Shuksan is winter hardy and tolerates alkaline soils better than any other variety. We recommend this variety for colder areas of the Pacific Northwest above all other varieties. Shuksan is good news for Idaho, Colorado, Utah, etc.. Totem is winter hardy also, but Shuksan blooms a little later, thus protecting the fruit from late frosts. Virus tolerant and Red Stele resistant. Does not demand perfect drainage.Tri Star: Everbearing
Developed at the University of Maryland and released in 1982. Sweet and aromatic. Produces a heavy, very early spring crop of small to medium short conic fruit. Cool fall weather will bring larger, more elongated fruit. Fall crop is the heaviest. Berries have firm, glossy, deep red skin with solid, medium red flesh. Fresh fruit flavor is excellent. Also recommended for freezing. Medium size plants with moderate number of runners which will bloom and bear fruit before rooted. This is a good variety for hanging baskets. Resistant to Red Stele and Verticillium Wilt. Tolerant of Leaf Scorch and Leaf Blight. Well adapted to upland areas in the south and mild areas in the East and the Pacific Northwest. Hardy zones 5 - 8.ASPARAGUS
